Medicare Open Enrollment may still be several weeks away, but now is the perfect time to prepare. Taking a little time now to get organized can make things much easier when Open Enrollment starts.
Medicare Open Enrollment (also called the Annual Enrollment Period) runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. Any changes you make take effect January 1.
Even if you're happy with your current Medicare plan, it's a good idea to review it each year. Your health care needs can change, and so can your plan's costs, coverage, and benefits.
Here are three simple ways to get ready.
1. Watch for your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC)
If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you should receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your health plan each September. This important document tells you about any changes to your plan starting January 1.
Your ANOC may include updates to:
- Monthly premiums
- Copayments and deductibles
- Prescription drug coverage
- Provider network
- Extra benefits, such as dental, vision, hearing, or fitness benefits
Take a few minutes to read through your ANOC when it arrives. It can help you understand whether your current plan will continue to meet your needs in the coming year.
If you don't receive your ANOC by the end of September, contact your health plan.
If you have Original Medicare, you may not receive an ANOC. However, you can learn more about the ANOC, check your current coverage and compare plans at medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
2. Think about your health care needs for next year
Your health can change from one year to the next, and your Medicare Advantage coverage should support those changes.
Ask yourself a few simple questions:
- Have I been diagnosed with a new health condition?
- Am I planning a surgery or medical procedure?
- Have my prescription medications changed?
- Will I need to see specialists more often?
- Am I planning to travel for an extended period?
Thinking through these questions before Medicare Open Enrollment can help you understand what's most important when reviewing your coverage.
Helpful tip: Keep these items together before Medicare Open Enrollment:
- Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC)
- A current list of your medications, including the doses
- The names of your primary care doctor and specialists
- Any planned surgeries or medical procedures
Having this information handy can make comparing your options much easier.
3. Review your coverage options
Many people stay with the same Medicare Advantage plan year after year. If your current plan still meets your needs, that's great. But it's still worth taking the time to review your coverage each year. Compare other Medicare Advantage plans available in your area to make sure your current plan continues to meet your health and coverage needs.
Beginning October 1, Medicare Advantage plans to share details about their coverage and benefits for the upcoming year. Comparing your options can help you understand what's available and confirm whether your current plan continues to align with your health needs and budget.
If you have Original Medicare, think about whether your current coverage meets your needs. You may want to consider whether a Medicare Advantage plan or a different Part D drug plan would work better for you.
As you review your coverage options, consider:
- Your monthly costs
- Your out-of-pocket expenses
- Whether your primary care doctor and specialists are in the plan's network
- Prescription drug coverage
- Extra benefits that are important to you
Even if you decide to keep your current Medicare Advantage plan, taking time to review your coverage each year can help you make an informed decision that's right for your health and your budget.
